I will preface this by saying, John McCain would not have my vote, but I admired him and this farewell excerpt are words truly spoken.
“I owe that satisfaction to the love of my family. No man ever had a more loving wife or children he was prouder of than I am of mine. And I owe it to America. To be connected to America’s causes — liberty, equal justice, respect for the dignity of all people — brings happiness more sublime than life’s fleeting pleasures. Our identities and sense of worth are not circumscribed but enlarged by serving good causes bigger than ourselves.” Full Statement.
In John McCain, we have lost a man of integrity, passion, and a man who holds true to his values. Despite all the challenges he faced in his political life, John still exhibited true humanity. The ability to fundamentally disagree with people but still uphold human dignity and decency. The ability to accept his human flaws but still fight for the greater good. This is the identity that is being lost in our generation.
Our identities are slowly being engulfed by self-serving individualism. John McCain could not have put it better when he wrote, “. Our identities and sense of worth are not circumscribed but enlarged by serving good causes bigger than ourselves.” This is what we should strive for. To groom a generation that serves for the greater good of others, that sacrifices egoisms that tend to serve self. That is the true America to which our forefather fought for.
